A note you definitely wrote is not where you left it. Before assuming the worst, it is worth knowing that notes on a Mac go missing in a small number of predictable ways, and most of them are recoverable.

The usual causes, in order of likelihood

It is on another Space

This is the most common one by far. macOS Spaces each have their own desktop. If you wrote a note while on one Space and you are now on another, the note is exactly where you left it, on a desktop you are not currently looking at. Press Control and Up Arrow to see your Spaces, then check each desktop.

An app went full screen

Full screen apps create their own Space and cover everything. A note on the desktop is not gone, it is underneath. This is why notes feel like they vanish specifically when you are deep in an editor, a video timeline, or a browser at full height, which is precisely when you needed the reminder.

It is behind your windows

A desktop note with no always visible behavior sits at the bottom of the window stack. Press F11, or use Mission Control, to clear the windows and look at the desktop directly.

Stickies did not save cleanly

Apple Stickies keeps its content in a database inside your user Library folder. If Stickies was force quit or the Mac shut down hard, the most recent edits can be lost, because Stickies writes on quit rather than continuously. Time Machine can recover an earlier copy of that database if you need it.

A migration or account change moved them

Sticky notes do not sync through iCloud the way documents do. Moving to a new Mac, or signing into a different user account, leaves them behind unless the underlying data was migrated with the account.

How to stop it happening again

Every cause above shares one root: the note lives on the desktop, and the desktop is the surface you can see least often. You can fight that with discipline, keeping fewer windows open and returning to the desktop deliberately. In practice nobody sustains that.

The alternative is a note that does not depend on the desktop being visible. TackNote anchors each note to the thing it is about, a specific window, browser tab, document, folder, or email, and shows it when you are looking at that thing rather than when your desktop happens to be exposed. Open the project, the note is there. Switch away, it hides. It is not on a Space you forgot about, because it is not on the desktop at all.

If you are deciding what to use instead, we compared Apple Stickies, Apple Notes and TackNote in our best sticky notes app for Mac guide, including the row where ours loses.

Two things make lost notes much less likely regardless of which app you use:

  1. Notes should be searchable. If you can search the text, a misplaced note is an inconvenience rather than a loss. TackNote searches note bodies, checklist items, and voice memo transcripts together, and Reveal jumps you back to whatever the note was tied to.
  2. Notes should survive a crash. Writing continuously rather than on quit is the difference between losing a sentence and losing an afternoon. TackNote stores notes encrypted on your Mac as you go.

If your notes disappeared today, work through the Spaces and full screen checks first, then Time Machine. If it keeps happening, the fix is not a tidier desktop. It is a note that does not live there.

On a Windows PC instead? Microsoft Sticky Notes goes missing for different reasons, which we cover in Windows sticky notes disappeared.
